Family law is an area of the law that deals with family-related matters. The most common family law cases are
– Divorce: This may include issues of child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, property division, domestic violence, attorney fees and change of marital status.
– Paternity, where the parties were never married, but have a child. This may include issues of a determination of paternity, and paternity fraud, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, property division, domestic violence, attorney fees
– Domestic Violence Restraining Orders even where the parties were never married or have children
Some consider probate guardianships and conservatorships to be a part of family law as they concern the legal relationships between family members. However, while many of the principles are the same in probate guardianships and conservatorships as are in family law cases, the procedures are vastly different, and require different knowledge and skills.
